In the aorta, this condition may organize to weakening of the artery, resulting within the formation of a fusiform aneurysm. There is also increased risk of aortic dissection.
There is an association between cystic medial necrosis and Marfan syndrome.

Cystic medial necrosis:
Degenerative disease of the medium of the aorta and other arteries with loss of springy tissue and muscle cells. It is a pathological substrate for aortic dissection. It may also be manifest by proximal aortic ectasia or aneurysm. Cystic medial necrosis may occur as an isolated abnormality or as segment of a systemic connective tissue disease such as Marfans syndrome or Ehlers Danlos syndrome. There is an increased risk of cystic medial degeneration and aortic or arterial dissection during pregnancy.
